The Auto-ID Center's mission is to merge the physical world with the information world - to bring bits and atoms together to form one seamless network, using the very latest advances in technologies including, electromagnetic identification, computer modelling, and networking. The Center is funded by forward-looking global businesses from many different industry sectors, all of whom share a single vision of a smarter, brighter and less wasteful future. It is headquartered at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, one of the world's foremost scientific institutions. Technologies currently being developed by the Center's scientists include the Electronic Product Code, Product Mark-up Language, and the Object Naming Service. "The service-driven network, as outlined in this project, is destined to improve the quality of the supply chain from manufacturer all the way to the end-user and recycler by simplifying its access to a variety information, communication tools and services. When complete, the Board will be made up of 20 diverse sponsors from around the world, representing industries such as consumer goods, retail, pharmaceuticals, food, transportation, etc. A primary function of this Board will be to build consensus between what end-users need and what technology can provide.
