Board
Meeting IX, Atlanta, Hits Milestones, Breaks Records
Representatives from five Auto-ID Center Labs
and 94 sponsor companies met in February at the Auto-ID
Center’s ninth Board Meeting, hosted by UPS Atlanta,
USA. The meeting was the Center’s largest ever.
Delegates received new research papers and business cases,
and discussed the progress of the technology, field-testing,
and questions regarding Intellectual Property, the future
of the Center and public policy. Two new EPC™ protocols
were presented and demonstrated. The High Frequency Class
1 protocol was introduced by Professor Peter Cole, Research
Director of the Adelaide Lab, and demonstrated by Philips
and TAGSYS. The Ultra-High Frequency Class 0 protocol
was introduced by Professor Sanjay Sarma, Chairman of
Research, and demonstrated by Matrics. Key interfaces
for the Savant™ middleware layer were introduced
by Professor Sarma, and demonstrated by OAT Systems. Other
research topics included remote packaging using EPC™
enabled robots, vibratory assembly, reader collision algorithms,
high-speed Savant™ Installation, low cost RFID manufacturing,
compliance and certification, and business cases including
retail, manufacturing, warehousing and mass transit. Mike
Eskew, CEO of UPS, addressed the meeting and underlined
his commitment to the Center and its vision (pictured
left). CVS, Coca-Cola, Toppan Printing, CHEP and the Department
of Defense gave presentations on their EPC™ adoption
plans. Research papers from the meeting will be published
to non-sponsors on May 1. Board Meeting X is on June 25
& 26 in Europe, and will only be open to Auto-ID Center
