Promoting civil liberties and digital freedom on the internet

2001

January 2001
The beginning of century 21 saw us still struggling against the Council of Europe's [COE] proposed cybercrime treaty. The Austrian chamber of commerce that was like similar institutions not officially informed before about a proposed international treaty that would have a severe impact on e-commercial matters submitted a pretty sceptical statement demanding changes of the document.

February 2001
Quintessential engineers built a search mechanism for cryptome.org, by far the best free archive on the net concerning crypto, secret services and surveillance issues. 125 megabytes of documents have been indexed already, a few hundred more MB are to come.

Somehow we got hold of the new draft Austrian surveillance law proposal called "Ueberwachungsverordnung" and could not resist the temptation of circulating the document for further evalution by the community

March 2001
After lengthy research on the ongoings in the Working Group Lawful Interception of the European Telecom Standards Institute [ETSI] the first two ETSI Dossiers were published. John Young of cryptome collects the documents on the upcoming worldwide surveillance standards for all digital networks.

April 2001
During the second general assembly of quintessenz.org a new board of directors was elected. There will be a an adaption of priorities concerning the fields of quintessential activism.
