Another 22 percent believe open-source code is a nice idea but would never be practical, and less than five percent of the developers were firmly against open-source software. ... Many respondents said they favor accessing source code openly so they can have the freedom to change programs and add features, the representative said. However, that freedom could turn out to be a curse in disguise, according to analyst Joshua Greenbaum, a principal at Enterprise Applications Consulting, in Berkeley, Calif. ... Without a central authority regulating the standard for an operating system or application and documenting all features and changes, the system or program could split into incompatible versions or develop problems that could not be diagnosed, Greenbaum said. ... "It's a prescription for disaster," Greenbaum added.
