Dr. McFarlane joined the Institute for Manufacturing at the University of Cambridge in October 1995 where his work is focused on appropriate automation and control solutions for manufacturing. He is group leader of the Manufacturing Automation and Control Systems Group and is a lecturer in Manufacturing Automation and Information Systems within the Manufacturing Engineering Tripos and Manufacturing Leaders Programme. He is a committee member of the IEE Next Generation Manufacturing Enterprise Profession Group, a member of the IFAC Working Group on Mining, Minerals and Metallurgy, and an editor on Springer Verlag's Industrial Control Series.
