Thorne is the manager of the Manufacturing Automation laboratory in the Institute for Manufacturing and is responsible for the overall operations and development of the laboratory as well as being directly involved with a number of past and present projects as a systems engineer. He plays a key role in developing and demonstrating teaching activities that take place within the lab for undergraduate/postgraduate courses.

Thorne is a member of the Automation and Control Group and is heavily involved in supporting research activities within the Laboratory.
